Stolen Art

Postby PrerendeRED » Apr 28, 2013 4:45 am

Dunno, if anybody has posted it already. Stumbled upon an interesting image on a Russian forum dedicated to survival horror games.
Everybody should've heard about the recent WarZ scandal where devs amongst many dirty things stole some assets from other games. Knowing that, the recently released artwork/screenshot (I thought it was a screenshot at first, but now it seems that it's a fabricated image) from TEW becomes more interesting:

P.S. It can't fit? Here's the link: http://s017.radikal.ru/i403/1304/88/2f478f3df008.jpg

Yeah this has been shown before. Not a big deal in my opinion.

Yeah, we've discussed that in another thread.

I think its a totally shameful, but in the end It's just a part of concept art for the game's development, the concept artist will get a scolding from his superiors (or fired!) and that will be the end of that.

If they stole assets and put them in the game though, now that's a big deal.

I just honestly hope Mikami takes advantage of this opportunity.

This is his chance to kick Capcom in the teeth, show people that he was a big part of the success of Biohazard, and to show how creative he is without Capcom breathing down his neck. Seeing stuff like this is not a good sign, even in concept art. He needs to get his sh*t together!

P.S. It also should be noted that WarZ players said that the graphics in the game looked nothing like these (early) "screenshots" too (much worse). So it's interesting where WarZ devs got them in the first place.

Firstly, Concept art is neither commercial art or art used for marketing, it is to be used internally. As such it can be composed of images taken from the net as long as the dev team get's the idea of what the concept of the image is about. It's a misconception that concept art is all about creating original images from scratch. If an image on the net can save you time in portraying certain things such as mood or unimportant background elements (which in this case, is just a bunch of generic zombies), then why not use it. Btw, I know this because I'm trying to break into this field and have attended many classes from various experienced and professional concept artists.

And yes, that image is not a screenshot, it is a piece of concept art. I saw the high res image and could easily spot the brush strokes and textures.
